The first three books in the Harry Potter series are $7.99 as e-books and $29.99 as digital audiobooks. The final four books in the series are $9.99 as e-books and $44.99 as digital audiobooks. Readers can also buy a complete e-book bundle for $57.54 or a complete digital audiobook bundle for $242.94

Registration for Pottermore begins July 31 — Harry Potter’s birthday — and the first million registrants will be granted early access. Others will have to wait until the broad release, set for October 1.

Up until now, Rowling was against digitally publishing the Harry Potter series, but had a change of heart. “It is my view you can’t hold back progress. E-books are here and here to stay. Later than a lot of people, I for the first time downloaded e-books and it’s miraculous for travel and for children in particular. I feel great about taking Harry into this new medium,” Rowling said at a press conferencein London.

The books are being sold in both ePub and Kindle format, and as such will work across all Kindle devices and reading apps, Barnes & Noble Nooks, iOS and Android, Sony Readers, Kobo, and other devices. Buyers will be allowed to download the books for personal use “up to eight times,” with no time limit, allowing for reading across devices. Parents can share purchased e-books with their own children, as long as they’re under 18.

“You might want to download a copy to your laptop, your tablet, and your child’s eReader—whatever the combination—you have eight available downloads per book,” Rowling’s site says. “Eight downloads will normally be plenty, so you won’t need to buy again. However, if you do download a book more than eight times, or want to buy it as a gift, you will need to purchase it again.”
